About the Arabic Language

Arabic is spoken by more than 400 million people and is an official language in over 20 countries stretching from Morocco to Oman. It is also the liturgical language of Islam, giving it cultural reach far beyond its native speakers, and it is one of the six official languages of the United Nations.

Arabic is written from right to left in a flowing script of 28 letters whose shapes change depending on their position in a word, and it has no capital letters. Formal writing and news media use Modern Standard Arabic (MSA), while each region speaks its own colloquial dialect - Egyptian, Levantine, Gulf, and Maghrebi dialects can differ substantially. Online translators produce MSA, which is understood everywhere but is not how people chat informally.
