Telugu is the most widely spoken Dravidian language, with over 80 million speakers, and is the official language of the Indian states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Its rich literary tradition dates back over a thousand years, and it was famously nicknamed the "Italian of the East" because most of its words end in vowels, giving the language a melodic quality.

Telugu is written in its own rounded script, which developed from ancient Brahmi writing. Like other Dravidian languages it is agglutinative, building complex words from a root plus a chain of suffixes, and it is structurally very different from English despite sharing many modern loanwords.

How Telugu Differs from English

Knowing these structural differences helps you write source text that translates well and spot problems in the output:

• Word order: Telugu follows Subject-Object-Verb order. "I eat rice" becomes literally "I rice eat" (nenu annam tintanu).
• Agglutination: Suffixes stack onto words to express case, number, and possession, so one Telugu word often translates an English phrase.
• No articles: Telugu has no equivalents of "a" or "the"; definiteness comes from context.
• Honorific plurals: Respect is shown by using plural forms for a single person - meeru ("you", respectful) versus nuvvu ("you", informal).
• Vowel endings: Native Telugu words characteristically end in vowels, which affects how English names and loanwords are adapted (for example, "school" becomes skoolu in speech).

• Automatic translation usually chooses the respectful meeru form. For a message to a close friend, the informal nuvvu register may be more natural.
